For most people, the holiday season evokes feelings of warmth, hope, and joy. As the weather grows colder and the days shorter, many of us enjoy decorating our homes, making gift lists, gathering with friends and family, and baking festive treats to celebrate the holidays. Yet, amidst the hustle and bustle of daily life and the many emotions that accompany this time of year, it’s easy to forget that the holiday season looks very different for those who are unhoused.

For many people experiencing homelessness, celebrating the holidays in the “traditional” sense is far from their reality. While the crisp winter air may prompt thoughts of hot cocoa and cozy fireplaces for many, those without stable housing are focused on where to find warm socks, hats, gloves, blankets, and other essentials to protect themselves from the cold. Wet winter weather presents an additional challenge, as waterproof clothing like jackets and shoes are hard to come by. At Three Links, many guests report that their waterproof gear is even stolen while they sleep, highlighting just how valuable these items are to the unhoused community.

The holiday season also brings an added difficulty in finding shelter. Throughout the year, people without homes often rely on public spaces like libraries, coffee shops, and other low-barrier locations for refuge from the elements. However, during the holiday season, these indoor spaces often have extended closures due to holiday observances, further limiting access to safe, warm shelter for those in need.

In addition to the physical challenges, many unhoused individuals experience deep loneliness and frustration during the holidays. While many of us associate the season with gatherings, family traditions, and the comfort of home, these are often out of reach for those without stable housing. For some, the holidays can also be a reminder of the disparity between their situation and the abundance around them. The frustration of unmet needs is compounded by the knowledge that others are spending money on gifts and unnecessary items while they struggle for basic necessities.

So, how can you help? One of the most effective ways to support the unhoused community is by donating winter clothing in good condition. Items like jackets, blankets, socks, hats, gloves, scarves, and waterproof shoes are always in high demand. Another simple yet impactful gesture is striking up a conversation with someone who is unhoused. Asking how they’re doing or what they need can do wonders for their mental well-being by reducing the isolation they often feel.

More importantly, support for the homeless should extend beyond the holiday season. Showing kindness and compassion year-round is essential. You can direct donations to Three Links Foundation via our CanadaHelps page. Other Vancouver-based charities like Covenant House and The Dugout also provide resources to the unhoused community and can use financial support. Consider donating monthly if you can! For donations of clothing or food to Three Links Foundation, please come to 1443 W 8th Ave any Sunday from 9:00 – 11:00am. Your help during this season (and all year-round!) is greatly appreciated.
